Project Directors
Colin Booth
Project Manager, Chair of the Curriculum and Communications Committees – Colin is a B.Arch candidate at the BAC. He explored a number of design-related fields before finally finding architecture, which bridged his academic and activist interests. Throughout his time at the BAC he has focused on furthering his understanding of sustainable design and its impacts on process, form, team dynamics, and firm culture. Colin has been an active member of the BAC community, serving on the BAC Board of Directors for the 2007-2008 year, as well as a wide variety of student and BAC board committees, including the BAC Sustainability Council. Colin is a Junior Architect at Sasaki Associates in Watertown, MA.
Kevin Horne
Chair of the Marketing Committee - Kevin is a M.Arch Candidate at the BAC. He has been actively involved in the Solar Decathlon since January 2007, as one of the project architects of the MIT Solar 7 House. Kevin is presently a designer at Menders, Torrey & Spencer Inc., working primarily on institutional-based renovations, including an extensive LEED based grant proposal for a local biomedical institute. In his spare time, Kevin helps co-run Autonomie Project, a Fair Trade Fashion company and is the web-developer for Fair Trade Boston, Phoenix Architects and Remote
Facilities. In his left-over time, Kevin likes to build solar cells made from blackberry juice and pretend that he can surf.
Stephen Messinger
Sponsorship Committee Co-Chair and Sponsorship Ambassador - Stephen is an M.Arch candidate at the BAC where he serves as student government President. Much of his early design career has concentrated on using thoughtful design to improve the planet. As a practicing LEED AP, Stephen currently teaches a LEED training course at KlingStubbins where he serves as a Revit Manager and junior designer. In his "free time" he plays soccer, bikes, hikes, skis, takes photographs, travels, and builds 800 sf solar houses with his bare hands.
Sarah Howard-McHugh
Chair of the Finance and Sponsorship Committees - Sarah is currently a MArch candidate. She is working as a Sustainable Design Researcher for Loheed Design Partnership, and is a LEED AP professional. Committed to building community through affordable housing, she served as a Housing Commissioner in Westport Massachusetts, and is currently a board member of Urban Edge, a CDC in Jamaica Plain. In her free time, she does yoga to relax and is co-president of a small non-profit, Ashmont Hill Chamber Music Inc., bringing high quality chamber music to the Dorchester Community.
Michelle Stadelman
Chair of the Construction Committee, Co-Chair of Sponsorship Committee, Construction Project Manager – Michelle is a M.Arch candidate at the BAC. She has a B.S. in Architecture from the University of Minnesota and a minor in Construction Management. Michelle has always been focused on sustainability and the environment and has been actively involved with Habitat for Humanity, Emerging Green Builders and the BAC’s Sustainable Design Committee amongst other local groups. She is currently a Job Captain at Bergmeyer Associates, Inc . in Boston and serves as Team Boston’s Construction Project Manager, as well as dance team captain.
Benjamin Steinberg
Chair of the Policy Committee – Ben is a Masters candidate in Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning at Tufts. While in school, Ben worked as the Global Climate Index Intern for KLD and Analytics, Inc., a socially responsible investment firm. Ben has focused his studies on sustainable communities, climate change, and energy policy. As part of his studies he conducted a climate adaptation vulnerability and policy report for seven communities within the Salem Sound north of Boston. He is currently finishing his Master’s thesis on how non-profits in the Boston region interact with each other on the issue of climate change. Previously, Ben worked in Washington DC for the National Association of Local Government Environmental Professionals and National Association of Regional Councils representing local environmental staff on a host of environmental policy and planning issues.
Matthew Thoms
Head Engineer and Photovoltaics Consultant – Matt is pursuing his Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering at Tufts University. As an engineering student with a strong interest in sustainability, he is involved with the Tufts Institute of the Environment and is a Morris K. Udall Scholar in environmental leadership. His current research involves increasing the efficiency of photovoltaic solar cells.
Student Leaders
Clay Larsen
Clay R. Larsen is a landscape Architecture student at the BAC. After his foundational work in puddle theory and frog collecting, Clay has moved onto urban watershed restoration and integrated storm water management. His work focuses on answering questions about water quality and quantity through landscape design, with a goal of developing ways to integrate aesthetically a toolbox of storm water Best Management Practices into dense urban environments.
Dante DeMeo
Electrical Engineering Lead - Dante has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and is currently pursuing a Masters and PhD in Electrical Engineering as well. His research at the Photonics Lab at Tufts University includes high efficiency photovoltaics and thermophotovoltaics.
Fijoy Fisiy
Fijoy Fisiy - Outreach Coordinator - Fijoy is an M.Arch Candidate at the BAC with a previous academic background in political science and environmental studies. She is fascinated by the intersections between architecture/design, underdevelopment, and the environment - pursing everything that falls within those boundaries.
Jon Hanson
Press Coordinator - Jon received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the BAC in January 2009. While a student at the BAC, Jon was elected to the BAC’s Student Government as both Secretary and President and also held a seat on the BAC’s Board of Trustees during the 2008-09 term. In recognition of his leadership and service, he was awarded the 2009 Alpha Rho Chi Bronze medal during commencement services. Jon continues to serve the BAC community as a Studio Instructor and Co-Chair of the Student Development Committee. He is currently working as a Designer at Silverman Trykowski Associates, Inc. in Boston, MA.
J.M. Hunter
DC Event Coordinator and Sponsorship Ambassador - a wild card originally from the land of 10,000 lakes, Hunter's interest in design, architecture, and sustainability brought her into the world of the Solar Decathlon, where she hopes to put her organizing skills to good use. The many iterations of Hunter include film and television art department coordinator, divemaster, PR account manager, triathlete, and resident foodie. She has a B.S. in Commerce from the McIntire School at the University of Virginia.
Arlin Ladue
Lead Student Documentarian - Arlin is rising junior majoring in Engineering Psychology at Tufts Univeristy, along with a minor in Film
Studies. He joined the team in March to begin filming a full length documentary about the Live Curio house, a project he is coordinating with other Tufts undergraduates interested in documentary film. Over the
summer, he is continually producing video content for the Curio website, including updates highlighting the team's progress as the house materializes. He grew up in Vermont, wakeboarding on Lake Champlain in

Damian Liddiard
Project Architect - Damian is a current M.Arch candidate at the BAC. Prior to arriving at the BAC, he spent several years as a Project Manager for a construction company in his native England. He has taken every opportunity to further his practical knowledge of construction at the BAC, with a heavy investment of time in sustainable Design-Build projects. He is currently employed as a designer at Tappe Associates, Inc. in Boston.
Michael Sidebottom
Mike Sidebottom is a senior at Tufts majoring in Civil Engineering. A team member since nearly the beginning, Mike is thrilled to have had
the opportunity to work on this project from its design phase to construction and soon to the competition in Washington, D.C. He hopes
to use what he has learned during this process and pursue a career geared towards sustainable building.
Hadiya Strasberg
Hadiya Strasberg is a M.Arch. student in her second year. She is Assistant to the Provost Office at the Boston Architectural College and writer/editor of the BAC Student Development Blog. Occasionally, Hadiya also writes for Traditional Building and Period Homes magazines, the latter of which she served at as Managing Editor for two years.
Hadiya has been a critical team member both on and off-site. As a consistent construction member, she has been involved in nearly every stage of the building process. Hadiya also assists in much of our event planning and marketing media.
Ross Trethewey
HVAC and Solar Thermal Engineering Lead - Ross is pursuing his Master’s of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering at Tufts University. Ross has a sincere passion for energy efficiency and living sustainably which has led to his involvement with the Tufts Institute of the Environment and projects like the Solar Decathlon. His master’s thesis is focused on the optimization of solar thermal systems. He currently works for Viessmann U.S. as a solar engineer and has many past experiences with HVAC engineering firms.
Grant Scott
Grant is a B.Arch Candidate at the BAC. He has spent many years in the Architectural field working in New Zealand, the UK, and the US, mostly in the residential sphere of design. Grant decided to branch out and explore different building scales and typologies, and joined Sasaki Associates to do so.
Bond Worthington
Bond is a current B.ARCH candidate at the BAC and a LEED AP. His experience at the BAC builds upon a background in residential construction and long term interest in the natural and built environment. Bond is currently employed as a designer at TRO|Jung Brannen.
Administrators / Educators
Greg Demchak
Principal Investigator (BAC) - Greg is a product designer for Autodesk and worked on design and implementation of Revit Architecture since 2000. Prior to joining Revit, he earned a SMArch at MIT, focusing on the intersection of housing, 3D modeling, and manufacturing. Greg has taught at the BAC since 2002, and co-taught a sustainable design workshop sponsored by an AIA grant. He is co-author of two Revit texts and actively producing a post-apocalyptic webisode series.
William Moomaw
Principal Investigator (Tufts) - William is Professor of International Environmental Policy at the Fletcher School. He founded the International Environment and Resource Policy Program (IERP) at Fletcher, and serves as Director of Climate and Energy at the Tufts Institute of the Environment (TIE). He is a lead author of four IPCC reports and working to develop an international reactive nitrogen pollution assessment program. He just completed a zero net energy house monitored by NREL that relies on grid connected solar PV and ground heat pump in the New England climate.
Vincent P. Manno
Associate Provost and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Tufts University - Vincent coordinates university-wide graduate education and oversees several cross-school programs including the Tufts Institute of the Environment and the Institute for Global Leadership. His field of expertise is computational thermal-fluid dynamics with applications in power production, electronics thermal management, and manufacturing. He has authored or co-authored more than 140 technical journal articles, conference proceeding papers and reports. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Jeff Stein, AIA
Head of the School of Architecture and Dean of the Boston Architectural College - Jeff served as Commissioner of Education for the Boston Society of Architects, from which he received the Honor Award in Education and Research and is a member of the editorial board and contributor to the magazine Architecture Boston. He is also the New England Press Association Award-winning architecture critic for Banker + Tradesman, and serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Paolo Soleri’s Cosanti Foundation, responsible for the continued design and construction of the urban laboratory, Arcosanti. He completed editing and translating an American edition of the Swiss architecture text, The Ecological Aspects of Building, with art historian Emilie Altemose.
Richard Griswold
Associate Provost for Student Development and Design Instructor at the Boston Architectural College - In 2008, Rich received the Ed Toomey Award for Student Advocacy for his progressive vision for the school and his commitment to both teaching and student development. During the winter of 2008/9, he was a MacDowell Colony Fellow. Rich has also worked as a design consultant for Elliott Associates Architects since 1996.
Antje Danielson
Program Manager of Tufts Institute for the Environment – Antje operates TIE which serves as Team Boston’s home on the Tufts campus. She joined Tufts in May 2008, coming from Durham University (UK), where she served as the Deputy Director for Sustainability at the Centre for Research into Earth Energy Systems. Previously, she worked at Harvard University in energy research and administration, taught environmental geology at Boston University and Durham University, and co-founded the carsharing company Zipcar. She holds a Ph.D. in Geology/Geochemistry from Free University, Berlin, Germany.
Susan Jacobs
Controller (BAC) - In her role at the BAC, she oversees the Accounting, Payroll and Risk Management functions. Susan has sixteen years experience in higher education which include previous positions at Harvard University and The Boston Conservatory.
Kathy Rood
Vice President for Finance and Administration (BAC) - Kathy has oversight and responsibility for financial planning, reporting and budgeting, audit, cash and debt management, risk management, operations and facilities, space planning, student financial aid, and honors and awards. Kathy also brings a background from the private sector where she has significant experience in the negotiation and financial management of major DOE and DOD funded contracts.
Eddie Randolph
Assistant Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations (BAC) - Eddie’s primary goals include securing unrestricted funds to support BAC operations through a mixture of corporate sponsorships, grant proposals, and fee-based programs and events. He also seeks funding for specific programs and initiatives aimed at supporting the College’s vision to keep tuition affordable. Eddie brings a fusion of creativity, analysis and innovation to the work by identifying, assessing, cultivating, and stewarding new and traditional sources of unrestricted revenue.
Christopher Swan
Associate Professor and Chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the School of Engineering - Chris has current interests in the areas of waste reuse, recycling, geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering, and civic engagement in engineering curriculum.
Tracey Thompson
Vice President of Institutional Advancement (BAC) – Tracey has served in senior management roles at a variety of non-profit organizations and institutions for the past 17 years. In these positions she has overseen substantial organizational growth and worked with donors, board members and volunteers on fundraising efforts that have improved life for thousands of people while raising millions of dollars for educational programs, advocacy initiatives and support services.

Rick Ames
Workshop Instructor - Rick is a founding principal at Next Phase Studios Architects teaches and practices a collaborative, humanistic approach to design and effective building performance and sustainability in housing, institutional and residential design projects. He trained at MIT and has integrated daylight, passive ventilation, and low energy systems consistently.
Lisa Bonneville, FASID
Lisa Bonneville, FASID, is an award winning interior designer, author and speaker and principal of Bonneville Design in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA, a firm she founded in 1981 that serves a residential, business, healthcare and retail clientele. A fellow in the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), she represented ASID on the National Fire Protection Assoc. (NFPA) Technical Committee for Furnishings and Contents, 2000 - 2007. In 2007 she was honored as the Small Business Person of the Year by the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce and is a charter member of the ADA Advisory Council in Manchester where she initiated the annual ACCESS AWARD, recognizing businesses that make their buildings ADA-accessible to the public. From 2007 - 2009, Bonneville served as the first woman and first interior designer Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Boston Architectural College (BAC). Lisa has served as juror, thesis advisor, portfolio reviewer, and on critique panels at Endicott College, Wentworth Institute, the BSA, the BAC, and ASID. In November of 2008, Bonneville was inducted into the New England Design Hall of at the Boston Design Center.
Wendell Colson
Architectural Technologies Advisor – Wendell works with Hunter Douglas as a professional researcher and inventor of passive solar gain and shading systems. He has a BA in Architecture from Princeton and has been employed by Hunter Douglass since 1985 after inventing Duette insulating honeycomb shades and creating Silhouette, Vignette, Luminette shade types.
Robert Darnell
Design and Construction Advisor – GC and electrician is a licensed contractor, member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) and Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE). At Agilent Technologies, Rob devised reliability based software solutions using Building Management System and introduced predictive maintenance techniques. Rob served as Electrical Engineer and as a General Contractor for the MIT 2007 Solar Decathlon entry.
Valerie Fletcher
Valerie Fletcher is Executive Director of the Institute for Human Centered Design, an international educational non-profit organization based in Boston, Massachusetts founded in 1978 as Adaptive Environments. The organizational mission is to advance the role of design in expanding opportunity and enhancing experience for people of all ages and abilities. Fletcher writes and lectures internationally. She currently oversees design projects ranging from the development of a global, web-based collection of case studies of universal design in ten categories of the built environment to renovation of an historic public building for a school of architecture and research on universal design in classrooms, workplaces and homes.
Her career has been divided between design and public mental health. She is the former Massachusetts Deputy Commissioner of Mental Health where she oversaw the largest participatory planning process in the history of mental health services in the US that resulted in closing four institutions and creating $74M in new community services including 1400 new residential units.
She is a Special Advisor to TOTO Ltd. and to the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs. Fletcher has a master degree in ethics and public policy from Harvard University. The Boston Society of Architects awarded her the Women in Design award in 2005. She’s a Trustee of the Boston Architectural College.
David Flint

Aaron Ford
Structural Engineer - Aaron has been with L.A. Fuess Partners for 9 years and founded their first satellite office in Boston. Current projects include a 6-story retirement facility in Chelsea, Massachusetts, a 5-story condominium complex in Hingham, Massachusetts and 3 bay Fire Station in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Aaron has enjoyed participating as structural engineer advisor for BAC/Tufts Solar Decathlon.
Nick Gayeski
Engineering Advisor - Ph.D. Candidate in Building Technology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Principal at KGS Buildings, LLC. KGS Buildings, through partner Stephen Samouhos, the MIT media lab, and other stakeholders is developing energy monitoring and feedback applications using innovative networked sensors and devices for the BAC/Tufts solar decathlon house. Nick also provides technical advice and consulting to the project team.
Michael L. Kyes, AIA
Michael L. Kyes, AIA, LEED - Integrated Design Advisor - Michael is a registered architect with over 17 years of experience advancing the discipline of architectural design and construction. The last 6 years have been devoted to academic clients including Harvard University, Brown University, and Salem State College. As a designer and project manager at Bergmeyer, he has recently led a team to a finalist position in the ACUHO-I "21st Century Project" multi-phased international design competition imagining the future of student housing. While serving as a design critic at Wentworth Institute of Technology and the Boston Architectural College or teaching at NESAD / Suffolk University, he encourages students to invent, innovate, and integrate. Michael's contribution to Team Boston has been to advise on the integration of structure, systems, materials, and construction methods.
Richard Komp Ph.D.
Solar Technologies Advisor - Dr. Komp is the author of “Practical Photovoltaics” and has been working on solar cells since 1960. He has taught numerous courses and workshops on solar energy all over the world including at the University Nacional de Ingenieria (UNI) in Nicaragua, the National Institute of Engineering in Mysore, India and College of the Atlantic in Maine. He is currently the president of the Maine Solar Energy Association.
Philip Loheed AIA
Design Advisor — Phil is the principal architect of Loheed Design Partnership, in Somerville, and also of BTA+Architects in Cambridge. A former equity Partner of Benjamin Thompson, FAIA, Phil has designed and built many projects worldwide over the last 40 years. He is also a BAC Faculty member, where he has taught since 1971, initially with a course called Natural Systems. At present he teaches a Core I Studio, open to both Architecture and Landscape degree candidates. He is also on the BAC Practice Faculty. At BTA+ he continues his practice of architecture and urban design. The firm Loheed Design Partnership is dedicated to sustainable design strategies and research in coordination with BTA+ projects. His commitment to environmental design is focused on strategies to fit people to the planet—globally.
Amir Mesgar
Structural Engineer - Amir has been with L.A. Fuess Partners for nine years and has guided the technical analysis for many of their most complex and challenging projects. These have included a new airport terminal and 11-story hotel at the Sacramento International Airport and a multi-building mid-rise apartment complex in Phoenix, Arizona which utilized a unique slip form concrete construction technique. Amir enjoys teaching Structure 3 course at the Boston Architectural College.
Tom Pittsely
Design and Construction Advisor – Tom Pittsley has 25 years of experience designing and building homes and is also the owner and founder of Energy Efficient Building Technologies, a design build company specializing in passive solar and zero energy homes. Tom was the General Contractor for the 2007 MIT solar decathlon team and has extensive knowledge of green building materials and building integration.
Bradford J. Prestbo
Design Advisor - Brad has been at Sasaki Associates, Inc. for seven years, and serves as a Senior Associate. While at Sasaki, Brad has been Project Architect and Project Designer for Sasaki's high-profile architectural projects. Brad has also taught at Suffolk University and participated on design juries at the Boston Architectural College and Northeastern University. As Architectural Advisor for BAC/Tuffs Solar Decathlon, Brad provides design and technical critiques for the team, as well as meeting individually with team members to provide in-depth discussion and advice on scope-specific topics.
Edwin Steel
A designer and builder in a prior professional life, Ed was the recipient of international awards for interior architecture and lighting projects. Know for collaborative work with artists and sculptors, he has also participated in projects for art installations, set design and industrial projects. He is a former BAC faculty member in both the Architecture and Interiors programs.
He is currently the co-chair of the Board of Overseers at the Boston Architectural College as well as serving on the Finance and Institutional Advancement Committees.

Martin Werminghausen
Workshop Instructor - Martin is a principal at Next Phase Studios Architects focusing on integrating high quality design with innovative sustainability such as Harvard’s 1st Science in Allston.
